Today’s presentation was made by Brent Johnson representing the David Nicklas Foundation. Their focus is on providing temporary housting for patients awaiting a transplant of a major organ. In order to be listed on the transplant waiting list, a recipient must live within a certain proximity to a transplant hospital. The David Nicklas Organ Donation Awareness Foundation provides free, fully-furnished housing for people waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, but are too far from a hospital. Housing is provided in a Foundation-owned apartment complex in the heart of DFW. The foundation's other important focus is to promote awareness of the need for organ donor registration for the purpose of organ donations. Some of their efforts to promote organ donation include achieving recognition of Organ Donor Awareness Day in Grand Prairie, Organ Donor Awareness Day with the Texas Rangers, and a scholarship program.
